Brompton Carpet Cleaning Health and Safety Policy

Brompton Carpet Cleaning is committed to providing professional cleaning services while protecting the health, safety and welfare of our customers, our employees, contractors and members of the public. This policy sets out our approach to managing health and safety across all carpet, upholstery and related cleaning work carried out in homes, offices and commercial premises within our service area.

Policy Statement and Objectives

We aim to prevent accidents, injuries and work-related ill health by identifying hazards, assessing risks and putting in place sensible and effective control measures. Health and safety is an integral part of planning and delivering our cleaning services and is not secondary to commercial or operational considerations.

Our objectives are to:

Promote a positive health and safety culture throughout the company.
Comply with all applicable health and safety legislation and recognised industry standards.
Provide safe systems of work for all carpet and upholstery cleaning activities.
Ensure that all staff are competent to carry out their duties safely through appropriate training and supervision.
Continually review and, where necessary, improve our health and safety practices.

Responsibilities

Ultimate responsibility for health and safety within Brompton Carpet Cleaning rests with the company management. Management will provide appropriate resources, information and support to implement this policy and will ensure that health and safety matters are considered in all key decisions.

Supervisors and team leaders are responsible for day-to-day implementation of safe working practices, monitoring performance and addressing unsafe behaviour or conditions. They must ensure that staff follow agreed procedures, use equipment correctly and report any concerns without delay.

All employees have a duty to take reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their work. This includes following training and instructions, using personal protective equipment correctly, reporting hazards or incidents promptly and cooperating fully with any investigation or improvement measures.

Risk Assessment and Safe Working Practices

Before starting work at any property, our operatives carry out a practical assessment of the working area to identify potential hazards, such as trip risks, electrical hazards, restricted access, delicate furnishings, pets and children present, or any special conditions relating to the surfaces being cleaned.

Where significant risks are identified, suitable control measures are implemented. These may include repositioning equipment and hoses to prevent trips, isolating electrical sources where safe to do so, using warning signs, restricting access to work areas, or adapting cleaning methods and products to suit the environment.

All staff follow agreed safe systems of work for carpet cleaning, upholstery cleaning, stain treatment and the handling of equipment and solutions. These systems are reviewed regularly and updated to reflect new techniques, products, equipment and legal requirements.

Use of Chemicals and Cleaning Products

We recognise that cleaning chemicals must be handled with care to protect health and the environment. Brompton Carpet Cleaning only uses products that are suitable for professional use and compliant with relevant safety standards.

Material safety information supplied by manufacturers is consulted and used as the basis for safe handling procedures. Staff are trained in the correct dilution, application, storage and disposal of all products. Wherever reasonably practicable, we select low-toxicity, low-odour and environmentally responsible cleaning solutions.

Chemicals are never decanted into unlabelled containers, and products are not left unattended in areas accessible to children, pets or vulnerable persons. Rooms may be ventilated where appropriate to minimise vapour build-up, and customers are advised if temporary restrictions on room use are recommended following certain treatments.

Equipment Safety and Maintenance

Our cleaning machinery and associated tools, including extraction machines, vacuum cleaners, agitation machines and hoses, are selected for professional reliability and safety. All equipment is maintained in good working order and inspected at appropriate intervals.

Faulty or damaged equipment is removed from use immediately and only returned to service once repaired or replaced. Staff receive training in the safe operation, transportation and storage of all equipment, including safe lifting techniques for heavier items.

Personal Protective Equipment

Where risks cannot be eliminated by other means, Brompton Carpet Cleaning provides appropriate personal protective equipment. This may include protective gloves, eye protection, safety footwear or other items as required by the task and risk assessment.

Employees are required to use the protective equipment provided, keep it in good condition and report any loss or damage so that it can be replaced promptly.

Protection of Customers, Occupants and the Public

Our cleaning work often takes place in occupied homes, offices and public areas. Protecting the safety and comfort of people in and around the premises is a priority.

We plan and organise work to minimise disruption and risk, using clear communication with customers about access, duration of work and any necessary temporary restrictions on room or area use. Trip hazards such as hoses and cables are managed through careful routing and, where needed, temporary signage or barriers.

Children, pets and vulnerable individuals are kept away from active work areas, machinery and chemicals. Surfaces may remain damp for a short period following cleaning; customers are advised of any slip risks and suitable drying times.

Training, Information and Supervision

All new employees receive induction training covering general health and safety responsibilities, company procedures and the safe use of cleaning equipment and chemicals. Further task-specific training is provided as required.

Training needs are reviewed regularly, and refresher training is provided when equipment, products or procedures change, or where additional competence is needed. Staff are encouraged to raise health and safety questions and to suggest improvements based on their experience at customer sites.

Accident Reporting and Emergency Procedures

All accidents, incidents, near misses and cases of work-related ill health must be reported to management as soon as reasonably practicable. Each report is reviewed to identify root causes and any lessons that can be learned to prevent a recurrence.

Operatives are briefed on appropriate emergency procedures, including dealing with spills, accidental exposure to chemicals, fire precautions and basic first-aid response. Where incidents occur on customer premises, we cooperate fully with the property owner or manager in any necessary follow-up actions.

Consultation and Continuous Improvement

Brompton Carpet Cleaning values the involvement of employees and customers in improving health and safety. Feedback is encouraged, and reasonable concerns are investigated and addressed. We review this policy periodically to ensure it remains relevant, effective and aligned with current legal requirements and best practice in professional cleaning.

By implementing this health and safety policy, Brompton Carpet Cleaning aims to deliver high-quality carpet and upholstery cleaning services while maintaining safe and healthy working conditions wherever we operate.
